Lil' Louis and the World - Do You Luv Me
A gorgeous deep house track from a master of the genre, Lil' Louis. He builds it slow, with tinkling electric piano and whispers... bringing in the synth, a little beat. And eventually a deeper beat. Gentle swooning vocals take you into melody, harmony and longing. And a trumpet solo takes you out like a bird taking flight. I swear I know every moment of this song. I was so obsessed with this album in 1992, and it was unbelievable how the crowd would come alive on the floor at the club when a Lil' Louis track started pumping out of the big speakers.
I miss dancing to house music.
Soul II Soul - Love Come Through
The magic of this track is in the details. At first you may think it's a simple affair. But really get into it. The sampled loops, the hi-hat, the depth of the bass, the birds chirping in the background. And the beautiful arrangement of the vocals as they layer over the bass line and eventually all over themselves. It's a fucking double-chorus people!
ps. at 3:45 when you're left with nothing but the loops, you are listening to one of my favorite 30 seconds of all time. I shit you not. I made a tape loop of that part of the song in college so I could listen to it endless-endless.
