"I made her say..."

Although I am a "fan" of Kanye West, he makes it almost embarrassing to like him - with that nutty ego. And on top of that, I can't say I like the last album much. What a downer! But I do enjoy these two collaborations, because they have a more playful, traditional KW sound.

Kid Cudi featuring Kanye West and Common - I Poke Her Face
A clever use of sampling that twists Lady Gaga's hit single into a paean to oral sex. Which I would say is a somewhat subversive act, considering the popularity of all parties.

I'd say this is a strangely mellow groove for the topic of erectile disfunction medication. There's an equally strange video featuring Keys and Kanye in old man prosthetics.

"two three four five six seven eight and back"

Summer's just around the corner. Time to get in swimsuit shape! Come by and do some squats with Jeff Jackson and Disco Connie at this month's installment of DHD. Just remember to stretch first!

DOUBLE HEADED DISCO
SATURDAY, APRIL 25
10 PM

Nowhere. No cover. No shade
322 E 14 Street
NYC

I wonder if they paid for this sample? I wonder if she even knows about it? Work it out, Hanoi Jane!

You gotta make up for that piece of cake. It would be a shame to lose that streamlined figure, Miss Ross!

[attention long term readers: this track is a repost from '07, but it's just too appropriate for this]

"one day baby, you'll realize I know"

I'm calling it right now. ALBUM OF THE YEAR. Of course I am a totally biased DFA nut, so perhaps I'm jumping the gun a little bit. But for those Nancy Whang fans (like me) who have been wondering why miss honey hasn't had her own solo record EVER, this is as close as we've ever gotten. Not that I don't also enjoy the canon of The Juan MacLean.

Anyhoo, I'm listening to the new album THE FUTURE WILL COME on repeat. It's retro cheap. It's synths and snare. It's a non stop party that I encourage you all to purchase.

"this is where it all came from"

In 1971, a bunch of American rock and R&B artists flew over to Ghana for a big outdoor concert called Soul To Soul. The featured artist was Wilson Pickett, but also on the bill was Ike and Tina, Roberta Flack, Santana, The Staples and a whole bunch of other artists and local African groups. There's a DVD release of a documentary about the show, and an accompanying CD of a selection of live tracks. Here's two of my faves...

Two songs - same name, same era - one slow, one fast.

Imagination - Body Talk
Slooooow. From the UK, 1981. They only made the most retarded videos. (See below).

The Deele - Body Talk
Fast! From Ohio, 1984, featuring Babyface and L.A. Reid, later known as LaFace!
