some of my favorite people are dead...

"Out of the ground, into the sky, out of the sky, into the dirt."

"Who do you ask when there's no one left to turn to?"

"Existence - well, what does it matter?"

"No one ever cared if I should live or die."

"we never calculate the currency we've spent"

Liza's at the Palace. She must need to pay the rent.

A brilliant, orchestral reading of the Pet Shop Boys song. From her 1989 album Results, a collaboration with Neil and Chris.

Pet Shop Boys - Rent (Dub)
A 12" dub of the legendary original version from 1987.

"come to my sweet melody"

I saw Roisin Murphy last nite. It was an inspired performance by one of the biggest talents in electronic music. She gave us Grace Jones Art Rock throughout, with a flawless voice and couture plumage. Everyone gagged.

Here's one track from every album. Learn it.

From Overpowered, 2007.

From Ruby Blue, 2005.

From Statues, 2003.

Single release, 2001.

From Things To Make and Do, 2000.

From I Am Not A Doctor, 1999

From Do You Like My Tight Sweater, 1995.

"out here on the street - they call it enterprise"

Memories of last weekend...

Cheri - Working Girl
I had the strangest day on Friday. I took the day off, but nothing went as planned. I went to MoMA and stumbled upon a gallery showing "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" by Nan Goldin. I know her work well. But I felt so naive and vulnerable all of a sudden, watching the 'ballad.' It really took me off guard. This song was featured in a section of the slideshow. Having never heard it before, I scrambled in the dark for a pen so I could write down the title and search for it later. My new favorite song, pretty yet sad.

Mary Jane Girls - Candy Man
On Saturday I got up early and went on a mini-road trip with the husband and two friends, one of whom brought his Mary Jane Girls cd along. I hadn't heard this song in so, so long. Wow - could this be any more au courant? Yelle eat your heart out.

"speakers they pulse to the sounds of the stereo"

Voici un Renault fire truck. Ecouté a nouveaux disco.

Codebreaker featuring Kathy Diamond - Fire
Kathy Diamond had a great debut album, but no follow up yet. Instead she's been bouncing around doing guest spots on other folks' tracks such as this one for Codebreaker.
The beginning reminds me of Xanadu by Olivia Newton John. I swear if you take the 45 and play it on 33, it sounds just like this.

"shake your body all over me woman"

This month, it's a testosterone filled night of disco by men - for men. All night, Disco Connie and Jeff Jackson will serve you all flavors of man disco, from ballsy baritones to fierce falsettos.

Here's a couple nuggets you may be familiar with.

This is the sound of cocaine being rubbed onto pussy lips. Listen to the background party noise. I don't think they were faking it, ok?

One of the original panty melters, Teddy gave you a hot bearded black man effect in white trousers and blouses.

BONUS VIDEO!

Teddy doing "Only You" in 1979. We'll be showing this performance in it's entirety on Saturday night.

"put a ring on it"

Hey kids - sorry I haven't posted all week. I have been a busy beaver. In lieu of tracks, here's a couple brand new videos I'm enjoying this afternoon, for those of you who don't read Pitchfork every day. Hope you like 'em too.

VIDEO: Beyonce - Single Ladies
I live for Beyonce, but I'm not crazy about this song. Sounds too much like Get Me Bodied from her last album. However, I am gaga for the video. Simple and pussy.

VIDEO: Q-Tip - Move
Who doesn't love Tip? Dude has been absent for too long. Let's hope the new album's hot and that the label believes in it and throws some weight behind it.

"I better pinch myself"

Like a cat, Sylvia Robinson has had nine lives in the music industry. In the 50s she was part of the duo Mickey and Sylvia, started her own label called All Platinum in the 60s, wrote and produced hit singles for many artists on that label, had a solo career in the '70s as simply Sylvia, then went on to start Sugarhill Records, kick-starting the hip-hop movement.

Sylvia - Sweet Stuff
A soft and sexy number from 1976 by Miss Sylvia.

A long slow jam from the 70s from The Moments who were on the All Platinum label.

"blowing up like a ghetto blaster"

New TV on the Radio y'all. I'm lovin' it.
